The PLA promotes assistance to veterans and disabled veterans transitioning to the construction industry and facilitates meaningful careers for our returning servicemen and women.

Helmets to Hardhats is a program of the Center for Military Recruitment, Assessment, and Veterans Employment that serves as a resource for preliminary orientation, assessment of construction aptitude, referral to apprenticeship programs/hiring halls, counseling/mentoring, and employment opportunities for veterans interested in careers in the building and construction industry. Contractors are advised to work with the unions to project upcoming workforce needs so that the Helmets to Hardhats program may forward notice of opportunities to veterans. Contractors will also strive to identify opportunities suitable for disabled veterans in the Wounded Warrior program. More information about Helmets to Hardhats and Wounded Warrior can be found online at http://helmetstohardhats.org or contact Helmets to Hardhats Western Regional Representative Nicholas Weathers: nweathers@helmetstohardhats.org

TJPA Construction Manager and General Contractor, Webcor/Obayashi Joint Venture, created the Veteran Building Futures Task Force and Veteran Hire Referral Network consisting of thirty contractors, union, state and federal organizations conducting a unified outreach program for veterans seeking construction salaried and trade careers. For more information, contact Webcor/Obayashi’s Martin Ranalli: mranalli@webcor.com or (415) 978-1172.

Anvil Builders, a disabled veteran owned business, was awarded CM/GC package TG05.3, Personnel and Materials Services.

Webcor/Obayashi is in discussions with San Francisco City College and San Francisco State University to promote Webcor/Obayashi’s development of an informational “Lunch ’n Learn Program” for current veterans attending community college or state university to learn more about careers in the trades.

This previous Veterans Day Webcor Builders renewed its commitment to the veteran community by signing the “United for Veterans” hiring pledge, a United Contractors’ driven hiring initiative dedicated to connecting employers with qualified veterans looking for work in the Construction industry.

United Contractors, a Construction Employer Association, developed this initiative for its members and the construction industry, thanks in part to the work done in Webcor’s Veterans Building Futures working sessions. Both TJPA and Webcor applaud their efforts and looks forward to working collaboratively with United Contractors to expand veterans’ opportunities in construction.
